How to read this calendar of activities
Coming activities at St. John's are listed on the calendar above. You may find references to any or all of the following kinds of events. This list is provided to facilitate your use of the calendar.
Regularly scheduled events
- Sunday morning Holy Eucharist: our services are from the Book of Common Prayer, Rite II. This service includes music, usually including both traditional and contemporary. Sunday School for children is offered between Labor Day and Memorial Day, while nursery is offered year-round. The first Sunday of the Month is a children's service, featuring a children's sermon, child-friendly songs, and a shortened service.
- Each Saturday a 5PM service is offered at Cranmer Chapel in Winter Park. This is usually Holy Eucharist (without music), but occasionally a lay person will lead Evening Prayer.
- Men's Bible Breakfast is offered each Saturday morning at 8AM. Breakfast consists of rolls or donuts, and after a social time, a layman leads a discussion of a Bible passage from the next day's readings.
- Bible Study for all is offered Thursdays at 6:45 in the evening. This is led by Fr. Spencer.
Occasional Events
- Adult Education is offered during Advent, Lent, and occasionally during the summer. Adult Ed always follows the Sunday service at 10:30.
- Music Nights are held three times a year in the home of a parishioner. These evenings include potluck supper and lots of fellowship and singing, of songs both churchly and secular. Call the church for location and directions.
- Evensong is held monthly during the summer during a boat ride on
Grand Lake. This is a sung version of Evening Prayer, and a picnic,
lake side, follows. We meet at 5PM at the Grand Lake Marina. Call
the church for directions.
Liturgical seasonal events
- On the fourth Sunday of Advent, we follow services with a "decoration" party to prepare the church for Christmas.
- Christmas Eve is observed with a candlelight service of Lessons and Carols, both at Cranmer Chapel at 5PM and at St. John's at 8PM. There is a Christmas morning service with Holy Eucharist at 9AM.
- The Feast of the Epiphany is celebrated as the last day of the Christmas season on January 6th and is followed with a "de-decoration" party.
- Lent is inaugurated with an Ash Wednesday service at 6PM. Stations of the Cross is offered on the first Friday of Lent and on Good Friday at noon.
- Holy Week begins with traditional Palm Sunday services and continues with Maundy Thursday service (with optional footwashing and stripping of the altar) and Good Friday service (with Veneration of the Cross). A candlelight Easter Vigil is offered at both Cranmer Chapel at 5PM and St. John's at 8PM. Easter Sunday service is at the usual 9AM time.
